Wellness is an ongoing lifestyle which requires making healthy choices and taking responsibility for your life. Wellness is about the whole person, about balancing the different dimensions of life and health.
It is a healthy combination of body, mind, and spirit & the loving acceptance of yourself. Wellness state of being is different for each individual.
To achieve wellness one needs to achieve a healthy balance of a combination of things, including one’s physical, emotional, spiritual, vocational, intellectual, social and environmental health.
It is much more than merely physical health, exercise or nutrition. It is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence. It is a proactive approach to living an optimal lifestyle.
Wellness is the integration of body, mind, and spirit-the appreciation that everything you do, and think, and feel, and believe has an impact on your state of health and the health of the world.
It is the right and privilege of everyone. Wellness is first and foremost a choice to assume responsibility for the quality of your life.
Social Wellness, Intellectual wellness
A person experiencing social wellness is living in harmony with his/her fellow human beings, seeking positive, interdependent relationships with others, and developing healthy sexual behaviors.
A person engaged in the process of spiritual wellness is willing and able to transcend oneself in order to question the meaning and purpose in his/her life and the lives of others.
Intellectual wellness is evidenced by self-directed behavior, which includes continuous acquisition, development, creative application, and articulation of critical thinking and expressive/intuitive skills and abilities focused on the achievement of a more satisfying existence.
Intellectual wellness is also evidenced by a demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning.
Wellness includes fitness. For a healthy living include weight training and aerobics in your exercise program. For a healthy diet, your diet should be balanced and include all food groups (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy, beans and legumes).
Stock your refrigerator with snacks (carrots, nuts, pumpkins seeds, fruit, low fat dip and raw vegetables, pretzels, popcorn, etc).
Physical Wellness is the ability to maintain a healthy quality of life that allows us to get through our daily activities without undue fatigue or physical stress.
Fitness refers to the ability of the human body to function with vigor and alertness, without undue fatigue, and with ample energy to engage in leisure activities, and to meet specific physical stresses placed upon it. It is primarily concerned with a person’s ability to function to a necessary level physically & mentally, and health is the state of wellbeing of an individual.
Improve your Physical wellness:
o Exercise 30 minutes per day & three times per week. Whenever possible, walk.
o Breakfast is an important meal of the day. Do not skip.
o Eat fat, sugar & salt moderately. Avoid alcohol or consume in little quantity.
Improve your emotional wellness:
o Have a positive & cheerful outlook towards life.
o Learn time management skills. Lack of time is one of the biggest stressors.
o Worry less and smile more.
o Join support groups if necessary.
Improve your mental wellness:
o Engage in a moderate physical activity.
o Proper nutrition goes a long way to keep mental wellness.
o Adequate 7 to 8 Hours of sleep is necessary.
o Practice stress management. (Meditation, relaxation & breathing exercises).
